This heartbeat plugin (dopd), using the heartbeat
communication channels, is one implementaion of
the "alternative communication pathes" mentioned
below in an excerpt from the drbd.conf manpage.

Using this helps to reduce the
risk of going online with outdated data
in multiple failure scenarios, since an
"outdated" drbd refuses to become Primary.
