Refactor: python: Stylistic changes to patterns.py.

More consistent spacing, rearrange variable initializations to be
grouped together, remove irrelevant comments and commented out code,
mark more strings as raw, and update the comment on how to run this as a
standalone program.

This still does not change anything that would affect users of this
module.
